The Dali Museum of Figueres

 

In 1960, Dali began to work on its theater-museum, in Figueres. It was its biggest project. He dedicated to his project the largest part of his energy until 1974. Dali especially focused on his  museum which was supposed to be built to magnify his art: ” I want  my museum to be build  as a unique  block, a labyrinth, a big surrealist object. It will be a Theatrical museum. The visitors will go out of it with the sensation to have had a theatrical dream. “

He went on developping until the mid 80s. With the agreement of the landmayor, he chose the ruins of the theater of Figueres set on fire during the Spanish civil war, where was realized his first exhibition in 1914. He designed himself a big part of the museum. The construction began on October 13th, 1970 and, one year later he began the paintings of the rooves of the theater-museum. In 1971, he got the gold medal of Merit of Fine Arts by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports (source wikipedia).
